Written Acts of Kindness Award: Beyond Survivor

Having been a social worker and having far too many friends who have been through sexual abuse, this is another must-share blog whose posts I regularly pass on via Triberr and Twitter. “Beyond Survivor” is a male survivor of childhood sexual abuse. He regularly blogs about sexual abuse and how it affects people, signs to look for and what the community can do about it. Please, follow their feed at Twitter: @Beyond_Survivor  and hook up with the blog, What Is Love at: http://whatislove-2010.blogspot.com.au

“Beyond Survivor,” thank you for having the guts to speak out and help so many people. I have noticed your share level is very high. I admire your work and guarantee I will continue to pass it on.

Written Acts of Kindness: Nominate an Awardee

At the end of last October I launched the Written Acts of Kindness Award. Giving them to people has given me as much joy as receiving them has given.

I still have a few very special bloggers in mind, but I’d like to give everyone the opportunity to nominate an awardee. Just tell me in the comments why they are special and where to find them. Your name will also be placed on the blog post. Don’t forget, you don’t have to get an award first to give it. Just grab the code and details below and blog away to encourage someone.

About the Award

Success never comes solely from your own efforts. There are always others along the way who give you a hand up; encourage you; or give you that resource, or piece of advice you never could have done without.

From today onwards, when someone inspires me, or if I see someone who is using their writing gift to help others, I am going to take the time to thank them publicly. To do that, I have created this award. I also want to make it open to anyone to use, so they can say thank you for making a difference in the writing community and/or in your life.

This is not meant to be just another blogger award, with time consuming requirements for passing it on. This is an award which is meant to be passed on with sincerity. You don’t have to receive it in order to be able to give it. You can take the details and images off this post now and use it to encourage another writer.

The rules for passing it on are very simple:

  1. You are welcome to give it out as many times as you like, but it is only to be given to a maximum of one person per blog post. If you wish to give multiple rewards, please space the blog posts by at least a week, so the sincerity is maintained.
  2. Introduce the person; say how they encourage, help or inspire you; then link to their work and/or social media profiles. There may be a specific post you wish to link to which helped you. It’s up to you.
  3. Please publicise your award post to Twitter or Google Plus using the hashtag #writtenkindness so that others can find and follow the award winners.

This week I’d like to give a huge shout-out to Gene Lempp. Gene is one of my ROW80 buddies and every week, he faithfully puts out a post titled “Writing Blog Treasures,” where he lists blog posts that are useful for the rest of us. Often he posts links to ROW80 members’ posts.

Gene has been kind enough to post my work several times, which I greatly appreciate. However, I also know how time consuming it is to collect links and put those posts together. So Gene, thank you. You’re doing a great job and I sincerely appreciate it.

Written Acts of Kindness: Megan DaGata

Early in 2012 I wrote an article on writers with depression. In researching that article I got chatting with Meg, I don’t actually remember how, but she was kind enough to throw around ideas with me and allow me to quote her on the blog post.

Megan has had battles with depression. She has a family which she is devoted to; and a take on the whole topic which is incredibly helpful for people going through similar experiences. Her blog, “Small Wonders and Other Thoughts,” is full of encouragement and wisdom. Megan, thank you for taking the time to help me out; and thank you for being a helpful voice for anyone who is struggling with parenthood and the stresses of modern life.

You can find Megan on Twitter.

Written Acts of Kindness: Lee Merrill

When I was first getting the hang of Twitter and was totally lost, I was lucky enough to find a special birdie who encouraged me and became a treasured friend.

As a writer I cannot communicate in less than 140 characters. That I actually found a lasting friend through that number of letters is nothing short of a miracle! It is Lee’s welcoming and supportive presence that shone through the restrictions I was rebelling against.

Not only am I often encouraged by Lee, many others are. She gives gifts, prayer and a great deal of positive support through both her social networks and her blog on a daily basis. That is a lot of work for someone with a family and a demanding job, yet she still has time for others.

This is from 2011. I kept it on my computer as a screen shot when I was having a bad day. Thanks Lee.

So thank you for being there for me Lee… I am sure that many others would also like to say thank you for being a ready ear and a virtual hug.

You can follow Lee through her Twitter feed and blog. She is also on Facebook.

Written Acts of Kindness Award: Janet Camilleri

This is an extra special award for me today and for her as it is Janet’s birthday… Janet Camilleri is a friend who I have had the pleasure of supporting for a few years now.

Janet is one of the gutsiest people I know. She had a vision to start an Australian magazine for Christian women; and with her own resources and a handful of supporters, she did it. Quite often the hard way. Janet has had many challenges to overcome in her life. She has attacked them with the same determination, and is an incredible speaker on overcoming depression and fulfilling God’s calling on your life. I am very proud to know her. She is an inspiration to me.

You can read about Janet’s story and visit the Footprints Magazine for Australian Christian Women website here: http://www.footprintsaustralia.com/ Links to the Footprints blog and e-zine are also found on that site.

Andra Watkins ~ “Queen of Attention Grabbing Titles”

This is not a case of “next on the list” as the last post fell through… I let the cat out of the bag and told Andra it was coming! So I decided to take the opportunity to put the post up.

I recently called Andra the “Queen of Attention Grabbing Titles.” She has made me do a double take a few times! I love Andra’s sense of humour and she has won this award, as she is a generously spirited lady who helps to keep me encouraged by her consistent comments, Likes and Plus Ones.

I love reading Andra’s blog. In the serious world of writing, we need people with great stories who can make us smile. Please visit Andra’s at: The Accidental Cootchie Mama

You can follow her via: https://twitter.com/andrawatkins and http://www.facebook.com/andrawatkinsauthor

Written Acts of Kindness Award: Kait Nolan

Being in the deep south of the planet and working from home, I often feel somewhat isolated. The most valuable writing initiative I have had the joy to discover is “A Round of Words in 80 Days,” which has been put together by author, Kait Nolan. If you are a regular to this blog, you’ve heard me mention ROW80 numerous times.

I love the philosophy of ROW80 and I have been given a welcome boost of confidence and support from other ROWers. I owe everyone who has supported me through ROW80 an award!

Kait, I just wanted to say a special thank you to you, for the amount of work you’ve put into this initiative. I know projects such as these take a great deal of time behind the scenes. I’ve also been impressed with how far through the 80 days the momentum continues without a huge participant drop off. As an online writing teacher, I know is a really tough call to achieve, but the atmosphere you’ve created enables its success. It’s been a pleasure to be a sponsor and participant. I will be here to support you for as long as I am able.

Thank you!

Kait’s web site is here and ROW80 is here.

Written Acts of Kindness Award: Shelly Immel

Being a chronic pain sufferer (migraine) and often battling to get any work done. Sometimes I need inspiration from others who are also fulfilling their dreams despite health setbacks.

Shelly Immel, founder of The Big Life Project is a beautiful example of hope and optimism, and what you can do to change the world, regardless of your circumstances. I often share her posts on Google Plus as she is an amazing inspiration to everyone her work touches. She is a writer with a brilliant sense of humour and a very special friend.

A Gratitude Challenge for Every Writer: Spread the Love this Thanksgiving

This thanksgiving, I would dearly love to see Twitter, Facebook and Google Plus flooded with Written Acts of Kindness awardees… especially as many people are struggling with NaNoWriMo. This is the perfect time to deliver a virtual bunch of flowers, encourage them and spur them on to being winners.

My challenge is for every CommuniCATE reader, to write that one extra, quick blog post over the next week and give the award to someone who has encouraged you; is struggling and deserves encouragement; or does something small, but significant within the writing community.

I have over 4000 followers, so let’s start filling up cyberspace with kindness and gratitude. Please use #writtenkindness so the rest of us can find and follow your awardee.

Remember, there is no limit to the number of awards you can give out, just place them in separate blog posts so they don’t lose their sincerity.

If you’ve been following the award posts, you’ll know the rules for passing it on are very simple:

  1. You are welcome to give it out as many times as you like, but it is only to be given to a maximum of one person per blog post. If you wish to give multiple rewards, please space the blog posts, so the sincerity is maintained.
  2. Introduce the person; say how they encourage, help or inspire you; or just why you love them! Then link to their work and/or social media profiles. There may be a specific post you wish to link to which helped you. It’s up to you.
  3. Please publicise your award post to Twitter or Google Plus using the hashtag #writtenkindness so that others can find and follow the award winners.
  4. You can also add your awardee to the “Hall of Fame.” Go to the “Written Acts of Kindness” menu on the top of this page and click on that tab. On the page you’ll see the Linky List to use. Additions are moderated to prevent spam.

Written Acts of Kindness Award: Alan Tucker

One author who stands out in the pack is Alan Tucker. Alan describes himself as “a dad, a graphic designer and a soccer coach.” Obviously, he is also a science fiction writer and most importantly, a voice for young people.

It’s Alan’s “Your Voice Matters” blog posts and book giveaways for teenagers which have kept him in my mind’s eye. It’s probably best to put his vision in his words. “Teens! Your voice matters and I’m going to show you how. I feel reading and writing are such important skills to have, my goal is to get all of you involved in caring about reading, and, just as importantly, expressing your opinions and beliefs about your reading. You may already be doing this, and if so, congratulations, that’s awesome I love it! So, here’s the thing: I want everyone to read and review books. Period. I don’t care if they’re my books, your uncle’s books, or a world famous author’s books — I just want you to read and express an opinion about them so everyone can see and benefit from it. A book review may not seem like much to you, but they actually mean a lot to people who are looking to buy a book, and especially to the authors of those books. Your voice matters!”

That is using your super powers for good! You can read Alan’s “Your Voice Matters” by going to the category search on his blog: http://motherearthseries.wordpress.com/category/your-voice-matters/

Alan, as we say in Australia, “good on you!” Please keep reaching our to our young people. They need it.

Written Acts of Kindness Award: Svenja Liv

When I was preparing for NaNoWriMo, I noticed that a lot of blogs were showing these dull, grey word count meter buttons. While functional, they didn’t appeal to me, so I did an open search and found gorgeous, free buttons on the blog of Svenja Liv. I blogged about them, and as a result, I’ve had the pleasure of seeing Svenja’s beautiful widgets popping up all over the place.

Not only has Svenja provided these gorgeous buttons for writers, but she has also put in, what I know is a massive amount of work, on providing attractive spreadsheets for counting your progress through the year and tracking your NaNoWriMo status. The artwork behind them is stunning.

From her bio: “Svenja is a self-taught artist, German by birth but living in Ireland. Having completed her M.A. in anthropology, she now works as a freelance artist and writer. Her work includes mainly portraits and fantasy-themed pieces, and her main media are pencils and digital work.”

Written Acts of Kindness Award: Morgen Bailey

Early in the year, I had the good fortune to discover Triberr. When I found Triberr, I was exceptionally lucky to find Morgen Bailey.

Morgen is a prolific writer. Every week her blog features interviews with other writers, her fiction and poetry. She is a treasure trove of useful resources and also has an interest in assisting other writers in putting their blog together. If you’re worried about how technical it can be… go talk to Morgen!

The greatest kindness Morgen has bestowed on me is by posting and reposting my blog articles through Twitter. As I often miss work days due to migraine pain, Morgen has, at times, kept the traffic flowing. I am very grateful to her for this. She is one of the very few, who regularly goes back through her shared posts and send them out into the Twitterverse again.

So Morgen, a heartfelt thank you for your support and for encouraging me. Having my work passed on means a great deal.

You can read Morgen’s blog here and her Twitter feed is located here. More links to her work can be found on that blog.
