Writing Rocket Fuel: Author Quotes, Henry David Thoreau

Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined.

If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with success unexpected in common hours.

Be true to your work, your word, and your friend.

If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put the foundations under them.

What you get by achieving your goals is not as important as what you become by achieving your goals.

All endeavor calls for the ability to tramp the last mile, shape the last plan, endure the last hours toil. The fight to the finish spirit is the one… characteristic we must posses if we are to face the future as finishers.

  1. Sorry you’ve been dealing with migraines. Those are no fun at all. I don’t know if it was jealousy on the part of Emerson or if he was just a stick in the mud :-) I hope you’re feeling much better and can enjoy some relief.

  2. I agree with Cyd — this is a good reminder of what public opinion can do to our self-confidence as writers to push on no matter what others think, say or do. Thanks, Cate for a good post. And here’s hoping that headache is improving daily.

  3. Thanks for bringing a little Thoreau back into my life on this weary day. I do love every word he wrote, but I never forget that Emerson presided over his funeral and lamented that the poor boy had wasted his life and never fulfilled his potential. It helps me remember that popular opinion of the day is not what we chase as writers, it’s being who we are, what we wove, and how close we are to writing the eternal human condition. {{{{{{{hugs}}}}}}}
